Lorca is Sinking

The major story in Murcia has been the revelation that the degree of damage suffered by Lorca during the May 2011 earthquake was caused by the extraction of subterranean waters during the last 50 years, causing a drop of 250 metres in the water table and creating a situation whereby the Lorca area has sunk 1.5 metres. Ecologists are now calling for action to be taken to stem the illegal boreholes and wells which proliferate across Spain.
